Why does excavation cost so much? There are many factors.
- A good contractor owns his/hers own equipment: residential excavation costs help cover the man-hours, the cost of purchasing the equipment, and the transportation and maintenance, these large machines can be quite expensive, which is why the excavation department needs to charge appropriately to cover the expenses.
- Size of area and accessibility: Excavators calculate costs based on the cubic yard of dirt moved or removed. The size of an area affects the cost of excavating. A small excavating job can cost about $150-$175 per hour. Some projects are bid as a whole and by the hour, just depending on the overall size of the project will be the determining factor on whether it's bid by the hour or estimated as a whole. We tend to lean more towards bidding out jobs as a whole unless hourly rates make more sense.
- Transportation: Getting these heavy machines safely to the job site takes an exceptional amount of concentration from highly trained and skilled individuals. one mistake could be very costly!
